Competition Celebrates the Work of Young Composers

The results are in for the annual David Willcocks Chorister Composition Competition, and we would like to congratulate the four winners for their wonderful compositions.

Congratulations to the four winners of our annual David Willcocks Chorister Composition Competition which is organised each year in collaboration with the David Willcocks Trust:

14-18 Age Group
Winner: Thomas, King’s Ely

Under 14 Age Group
Winner: Zino, Wells Cathedral School (photo above)
Highly Commended: Anna, The Minster School, Southwell
Highly Commended: Hugo, Chester Cathedral

Participants were asked to set the text ‘I will give thanks unto the Lord’ for choir with or without accompaniment.

The competition was judged by Jonathan Willcocks and Charlie Willcocks on behalf of the David Willcocks Trust and in addition to feedback on the compositions shared the following encouragement with the participants:

“We hope that you found the opportunity to develop your composing in this competition exciting and fulfilling, however experienced we are as composers we all learn every time, we put pen to paper (although for many of you now it may be mouse cursor to music notation software!). Keep composing and we look forward to seeing more of your work next time the Composition Competition is held.”

The Choir Schools’ Association is very grateful to the David Willcocks Trust for enabling this competition to take place and we know from the numbers of entries received that it is enthusiastically appreciated by our members – and that the future of new music for cathedral choirs is in safe hands!
