The Prebendal School, Chichester

While steeped in history, with its roots in the very foundations of Cathedral life, Prebendal today is a modern, inclusive and forward-thinking school in the heart of the city. One of the first co-educational schools in the country, we welcomes boys and girls aged 3 – 13 years. Small classes, individual attention and a secure, caring environment with a family feel gives every child the opportunity to achieve their best potential, academically and in the development of their character and values.

Music, sport and drama are areas in which our pupils excel. Led by experienced and accomplished teachers, pupils with particular talents will benefit from the School’s expert tuition and talent-nurturing ethos.

A vibrant and dynamic school with a big heart, Prebendal inspires effort, aspiration and excellence. Come and visit us to discover what we can offer your child.

Our Choristers

It is an extraordinary experience being a Chorister and our girls and boys are lucky enough to be part of a tradition that has spanned over 900 years. As the choir school for Chichester Cathedral, our Choristers sing almost daily in one of the country’s most iconic buildings. Our Choristers receive what is arguably the greatest musical education possible.

Being a Chorister is a huge privilege and they regularly take part in concerts, broadcasts and recordings as well as touring and collaborating with groups around the UK and abroad.

This unique musical education gives them a foundation for continuing success and Chorister training is centred on teamwork. They develop confidence, independent learning, listening, discipline and motivation all to an extremely high standard – qualities that stay with them for life. All boys learn to sight-read.

Nearly all of our choral scholars learn to play the piano and an orchestral instrument. Instrumental practice is timetabled and supervised by the school’s music staff, establishing invaluable good practice habits for the future. Many Choristers attain high ABRSM grades and, perhaps even more importantly, gain an understanding and appreciation of a breadth of music beyond the graded syllabus.

Choir practices are arranged into a normal school day while regular treat nights are organised and the Choristers’ musical achievements are continually celebrated both in school and beyond. The Cathedral and The Prebendal also work together to ensure excellent pastoral care and a dedicated continuity between the settings of Cathedral, school and life at home.
