St. Andrew’s Cathedral Choir is Australia’s oldest, continuous musical institution. Formed for the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1819, the Choir of boys and men- some from convict backgrounds, has been singing ever since. When Australia’s first Cathedral was finished in 1868, the Choir found their new home after the temporary wooden Cathedral was taken down, and when St Andrew’s Cathedral School was founded for the purpose of educating those Cathedral choristers, their future was secure.
The Choir sing at least three fully-choral services weekly and have tour nationally and internationally, singing at King’s College Cambridge, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral Siena Cathedral & St Eustache in Paris. They have provided the music for some of the most significant State and National Occasions, and the training the boys have received has produced many of Australia’s most gifted musical and cultural leaders.
They became the Southern Hemisphere’s most-listened-to choir during Covid and remain of the world’s most popular livestreamed Anglican church choirs.
