Young people from all over the world come to Chetham’s School of Music, in the heart of Manchester, to nurture a love of music.
All the students have different ideas and perspectives, but a common bond of musical passion makes for a truly inspirational place to live, learn, and make connections.
Around 330 students, aged 8-18, attend Chetham’s and are taught by world-class tutors. They are awarded places based on musical ability and potential, not ability to pay, thanks to generous bursaries through the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme.
Music and academic success go hand-in-hand, and the School’s thriving alumni community includes professional musicians, actors, politicians, journalists, neuroscientists, teachers and more.
Our Choristers
Chetham’s educates the Choristers of Manchester Cathedral. Boys and girls join the friendly group of choristers between the ages of 8-10, and usually continue singing with the choir until around the age of 13.
We welcome applications all year round.
Choristers attend rehearsals in Manchester Cathedral where they sing for weekly services and special events. Concerts, special services and broadcasts on both radio and television form a regular part of a Chorister’s experience.
At the age of 13 choristers may re-audition for Chetham’s as instrumentalists or first study singers, funded through the Music and Dance Scheme. Those who continue as singers may choose to retain close links with the Cathedral music programme as young choral scholars, singing regularly alongside younger choristers and professional lay clerks.
