Our Benedictine founders bestowed an educational mission which is particularly compelling in today’s commoditised world. Every child is a gift, and we must educate them wholly, mind, body and soul, enabling them to flourish fully.
Our pupils learn that everyone has unique talents, to look for the good of others, want the best for them, grow and learn from our differences. They develop a strong respect for, and service to, others and are inspired to be grounded, thoughtful, compassionate people who go and do good in the world. So Ampleforth provides a practical guide to finding meaning and purpose in life – a Compass for Life.
We have a strong scholastic tradition and encourage a lifelong love of learning. Most go on to top UK universities, including Oxbridge, and we equally celebrate those who choose other paths.
Pupils from all over the UK and across the world come to our beautiful valley. 80% are boarders but we encourage families to visit our hospitable community whenever possible. A huge range of activities, enrichment opportunities, and social events keep them busy and they love their time here. They make lifelong friends and consider Ampleforth as a second home for life.
Our Choristers
The Schola Cantorum is a 40 strong mixed SATB choir made up exclusively of students drawn from the school. They sing two choral services per week in Ampleforth Abbey with additional liturgies and concerts throughout the year. Rehearsals and services are carefully managed to ensure academic lessons are not affected. Age of entry to the choir is 13 though a training programme is in effect for promising singers in the Junior House (ages 11-13). Choir members are not required to board but free boarding is provided on Saturday nights in readiness for their Sunday duties. Auditions for choral scholarships are held in the November of the year preceding entry, however the Director of Music is happy to hear potential choristers at any time of the year by appointment.
