King’s School, Gloucester invests £2.4m in its 6th Form building

The King’s School in Gloucester has announced plans for an exciting £2.4 million re-development of its current Sixth Form building, transforming it into a 21st century for both students and the wider community to use.

The Sixth Form building is Grade II* listed and dates back to the 13th century.  Although packed with historic features, it is currently a myriad of small spaces unsuited to the aspirations of the students.

The new facility, cleverly designed by the Gloucester-based firm Roberts Limbrick Architects, will create larger, brighter, open spaces, with separate learning and social areas, including a café, to accommodate growing pupil numbers and the 28 A Levels and 1 BTEC subject taught at King’s. The historic features of the building will also be restored and preserved for future generations.

Parents help fund through bonds

The funds required to transform the building have been raised by an innovative sale of bonds to parents, which will generate a 3% annual interest and will be fully repaid in 7 years.

Headmaster, David Morton, commented, “based in the city centre and with excellent academic results, our Sixth Form is becoming an increasingly popular choice for students throughout Gloucestershire. This project is a very exciting chapter in the School’s long history in Gloucester, which will also see us offering more bursaries and scholarships, and underlines our commitment to ensuring our students receive a first class education in state of the art facilities.”

The firms employed on the project are all based in Gloucestershire and include Town and City Builders, Walker Pritchard Quantity Surveyors and Hydrock Structural Engineers. The work will start at the beginning of April, to coincide with the Easter holidays, and will be completed by the end of August – ready for the beginning of the new school year in September.

King’s only has a handful of spaces available in the Sixth Form for this September so get in touch as soon as possible for further details: admissions@thekingsschool.co.uk or call 01452 337 337.
