The CSA-funded project engaged an entire Year 6 class of 30 pupils at Pendoylan Primary School, introducing them to a year-long programme of music-making and songwriting that complemented their curriculum.
Working with guidance from a specialist music teacher, pupils developed their own songs by choosing topics, writing lyrics and composing music using keyboards. This hands-on approach gave them ownership of their learning, helping to build creativity, confidence and musical skills while demonstrating how music is created in real-world contexts.
A key element of the project was establishing a strong culture of class singing, culminating in a Christmas concert performance that provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to perform publicly. The experience strengthened confidence, teamwork and a sense of achievement while celebrating their progress with the wider school community. The project has generated high levels of enthusiasm and engagement across pupils of all abilities, encouraging collaboration and self-expression.
The musical equipment funded by the Choir Schools’ Association has played an important role in supporting these activities, enabling a wider range of practical music-making experiences. Overall, the partnership has successfully enriched pupils’ musical education, fostered creativity and delivered meaningful performance opportunities that will have a lasting impact.
