Exeter Cathedral & its Choristers at Christmas

An exhibition celebrating Exeter Cathedral and its choristers at Christmas opens on Tuesday 21st November until Friday 15th December.

Forty local artists have come together for the first time to showcase work that demonstrates their shared love and celebration of Exeter Cathedral. It has been organised by the Cathedral and the Matthew Locke Society, which is made up of chorister parents and other supporters of the Cathedral and Exeter Cathedral School.

All the artists have strong West Country connections and have taken their inspiration from the history and architecture of the Cathedral, its music, the choristers and their own experiences.

Matthew Locke sang in the Cathedral Choir in the early 1600s and went on to become a well-known composer of choral music. MLS fund-raises for the choir to help support the choristers through their busy schedule. They host a family Christmas lunch, an Easter egg hunt, and simple pleasures like trips to the cinema between busy Christmas commitments. Money raised also helps support outreach concerts which promote Cathedral music to a wider audience including local primary schools.

For many years MLS has raised money through the sale of Christmas cards. This year cards feature some of the work on display and will be available to purchase from the Cathedral Shop, Exeter Christmas Market, Darts Farm and Cards for Good Causes.

The Exhibition is a wonderful and intimate depiction of Exeter Cathedral and its choir at work and play. Entry is included in the Cathedral admission charge so why not plan a trip to Exeter later this term!
