Chetham’s at 50 – Stoller Hall’s New Season

Stoller Hall, Chetham’s School of Music’s terrific new chamber concert hall, has just announced its Autumn/Winter season.

The season runs from September 2018 to February 2019, and includes the first events in two special series marking 50 years of Chetham’s role as a specialist music school, and the arrival in the same year of its first female students. Chetham’s at 50 will see 50 concerts taking place throughout the year in 2019,  with music from current students and alumni showcasing all that Chetham’s is today.

This Woman’s Work is a celebration of women in music, as performers, teachers, learners, and most especially as composers, in Clara Schumann’s bicentenary year, and featuring music by Sally Beamish, Nicola LeFanu and emerging women artists.  It opens on Thursday 15 November with the world première of Carpe Vitam a new work by Laura Rossi based around 100 years of women’s suffrage.

In January 2019, the first events begin to mark 50 years of Chetham’s role as the UK’s largest specialist music school. Over a full year, fifty concerts will celebrate all that Chetham’s is today, involving student and alumni musicians, professional and community players, and concerts in Manchester and beyond.

First in the season are pianists Boris Berman and Leon McCawley, who open the Striking Gold Piano Series which will later feature Paul Lewis, Angela Hewitt and more. The Gould Piano Trio perform with Robert Plane, clarinet, and current Chetham’s students open their year with Elgar’s Enigma Variations – a musical celebration of friendship and virtuosity.

The programme is packed with numerous other events including three concerts by Manchester Camerata – “probably Britain’s most adventurous orchestra”; and appearances by the innovative new chamber ensemble, Manchester Collective and the Northern Chamber Orchestra. There is plenty for lovers of contemporary music and Manchester Cathedral choristers will be joined by young singers across Greater Manchester for Bach’s St Matthew Passion.
