CHORISTERS OUT & ABOUT

Choir schools are increasingly involved with promoting singing and instrumental playing in their locality and are at the forefront of the Sing Up Campaign to boost singing in primary schools. Government funding of £10million, announced in January, includes money to support up to 35 choir school/cathedral projects throughout England.

It is now nearly eight years since the first such project got underway in Cornwall. Since then Truro Cathedral choristers have sung with and enthused masses of local primary school pupils. 21 similar programmes (listed below) have been launched to date: choristers visit primary schools and give joint concerts; Saturday junior choirs have been started; and animateurs have been appointed to work in primary schools.

These partnerships are proving a great hit with everyone involved – they are uniting cathedrals, music services and communities and touching the lives of thousands. The children clearly love singing together, their families and friends enjoy the concerts while staff, whether they work for the cathedral, music services or primary schools all experience a huge sense of achievement.

CSA & THE SING UP CAMPAIGN

Sing Up CampaignSing Up is a new government funded programme of singing activity for primary school-aged children in England. The aim of the programme is to make singing central to children’s lives in school, in the home and in the wider community. The Sing Up consortium will produce a national programme comprising of a singing resource or ‘songbook’, a media and schools campaign highlighting the benefits of singing and a workforce development programme to build the confidence and expertise of primary school teachers, musicians and parents in leading and supporting children’s singing activities.

Sing Up – the Music Manifesto National Singing Programme, produced by Youth Music, The Sage Gateshead, AMV-BBDO, and Faber Music, supported by Government.

The following CSA members are part of the National Singing Programme’s Sing Up Campaign. Some already have their websites up and running, while others are under construction and will be added as soon as they go ‘live’.
