Conference 2011

This year's annual conference for CSA members was held in York from Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 May.  We were delighted to welcome CSA Patron HRH The Duchess of Kent to speak about her charity Future Talent.   We also enjoyed lively contributions from Professor Graham Welch from the Institute of Education and Professor David Howard from York University.

\This year's conference will be in Salisbur from 7-9 May.

CSA Reaches Out

CSA has worked closely with government for more than twenty years. It administers means-tested funding to help choristers through the Music and Dance Scheme and through its Chorister Outreach Programme was a very successful part of the National Singing Programme. You can read all about this fruitful relationship by clicking on CSA & Outreach.

Chorister Composition 2011

This year's competition has been won by Isaac Milhofer, a chorister at Bristol Cathedral School.  His setting of "Keep me as the Apple of the Eye" impressed judge Alison Cox, Head of Composition at The Purcell School.   She praised his work as "sophisticated and effective" and was impressed "by your understanding and use of harmony, your treatment of the voices and your creativity with choral textures."

There were two runners up this year:

Georgia Darke (year 5) from Salisbury Cathedral entered her carol "Shine out on us" - she is not only a winner but also the first girl to enter the competition!

Also picked as a winner was Francis Bushell, an 11 year old from St John's College School, Cambridge.

Once again, Alison was impressed with the entries.  Hopefully there will be lots more budding composers ready to have a go in 2012!

King's Peterborough Turn Clocks Back

Wednesday 8 September was a very special moment in the history of the King's School, Peterborough. From its its foundation by Henry V111 in 1541 and up to 1948 it accommodated both junior and secondary level pupils.

However, it became an 11-18 school after the war, initally for boys but becoming co-educational in 1976

The clock has now been turned back as the school age changed from 7-18 with the opening of a 60 place Junior Department.   35 of the new intake are cathedral choristers.

Another exciting change is that this is the first time girls under 11 have been able to take up choristerships.
